Local anesthetic commonly used as a topical pain reliever. As benzocaine is not absorbed significantly from mucous mebrane or abraded skin, so it is used in as lozenges for stomatitis and sore throat; dusting power/ointment on wounds/ulcerated surfaces and as suppository for anoreactal lesions.
Contra Indication
:
Oropharyngeal dyskinesia.
Caution
:
Excessive use as aerosol may cause aspiration pneumonia.
Side Effect
:
Allergic reactions, very prolonged use may cause methemoglobinemia.
